The Boss, the alpha hen, big chief. Mama is just that the mama of the flock, she is tough and mean. When she goes broody she will peck the skin off your hand as your checking for eggs, she is always watching for any predators and will keep her distance from you.
We got Mama from a lady I ran into at the local farmers supply store, she just got some chickens that had some unexpected chicks. So we got Mama and 3 chicks for free, this was the start of our flock and we got in way over our heads. It was a crash course in chickens we had nothing when we got them so I made a small brooder in the garage that they would stay in until the baby chicks were old enough to go out side.
She came with 3 chicks, two were hens and one was a rooster. The rooster found a new home and the hens make up our flock, their names are Tweedledum and Tweedledee, all three produce good large eggs.
Mama may be mean and likes her space but she keeps everyone inline and does her job well, once we decided to get some more chicks she will make a good mama to raise them.
